Angkor Wat Equinox is a special solar phenomenon that occurs twice a year at Angkor Wat in Cambodia. During the Equinoxes, you can see the sun rising directly over the central lotus (Prang) of Angkor Wat if you stand in front of the western entrance of the temple. The Angkor Wat Equinox occurs twice a year, the Spring Equinox and the Autumn Equinox. The Spring Equinox falls around March 20th, while the Autumn Equinox occurs around September 20th.
The Angkor Wat Spring (Vernal) Equinox
The Spring Equinox at Angkor Wat typically occurs around March 20th or 21st (the exact date varies slightly each year). On this morning, if you stand at a specific point on the main causeway leading to the western entrance of Angkor Wat, the sun will rise directly over the central, tallest tower of the temple. The rising sun appears to perfectly crown the tower, creating a dramatic silhouette against the brightening sky. This alignment is precise and lasts for only a few minutes as the sun continues its ascent. The light then gradually illuminates the entire temple complex.
Angkor Wat Autumnal (Fall) Equinox
The Autumnal Equinox at Angkor Wat occurs around September 22nd or 23rd each year. Similar to the Spring Equinox, the sun rises directly over the central tower when viewed from the western entrance causeway. The visual effect is the same: the sun appears to sit perfectly atop the central spire, creating an iconic silhouette before fully illuminating the temple.

The spectacular event of the Equinox is believed to be a part of Angkor Wat’s marvellous architectural design, meticulously crafted by ancient Angkorian scholars. Many experts believe Angkor Wat’s construction reflects a remarkable integration of astronomy, engineering, mathematics, and architecture causing the Sun to accurately rise over the middle, topmost prang of the temple.
